How is music used to produce locality within the context of the re-democratization and economic liberalization of Brazil in the late 20th century?

This dissertation concerns a revival of interest in traditional rural musical genres in the contemporary Brazilian Central-South---genres known as musica caipira and musica de viola . I argue that the interlocking generic features of rural musical texts, including lyrical motifs, 'hick,' non-Standard pronunciation and usage, instrumentation, vocal styling, rhythm, and harmonization, offer performers and listeners a rural poetics with which to criticize Brazil's approach to urbanization over the last century. Music's special force is partly attributed to the central role it is thought to have played in Central-Southern social reproduction in bygone days. It is also thought to offer a particular voicing unavailable to users of other media. For these Revivalists, music seduces at the same time as it argues. It hits you in the head and the heart.

Since this Revivalist practice simultaneously criticizes and draws upon other Brazilian musical genres, I will develop an analysis of the field of musical production. In this way I will delineate other musical approaches to the rural, and contrast these with that of the Revivalists, for whom 'country' entails counteracting the seemingly insurmountable calls to progress made by big business, language-standardizing institutions, and the massive entertainment industry.
