Landscape architecture is an increasingly complex profession, practiced in an increasingly complex environment. While planting design is only one component of the profession, a review of landscape architecture curricula reveals an under-emphasis on the technical aspects of planting design.

520 $a Landscape architecture is an increasingly complex profession, practiced in an increasingly complex environment. While planting design is only one component of the profession, a review of landscape architecture curricula reveals an under-emphasis on the technical aspects of planting design.
520 $a This under-emphasis is due in large part to the increasing demands placed on students during their academic experience, as more requirements are being forced into already overcrowded curriculums. The problem is augmented by the fact that the most useful information in dealing with the technical aspects of planting design is found in multiple classes outside of most landscape architecture curriculums.
520 $a What is necessary is a class that addresses the latest research of soil scientists, horticulturists, botanists, and other scientists in a form that design students can understand. Students will benefit by having the scientific jargon interpreted into the design process, and by having this content in one class.
520 $a This content includes the incorporation of the latest research into soils, pit design, tree-environment relationships, amendments, staking, fertilizing, and design and layout, which in many cases contradicts the traditional practices of landscape architecture. New areas, such as maintenance and soils specifications, help to change the role of the landscape architect in the design, construction and maintenance process.
520 $a An introduction to this material will help students be better able to deal with the complex problems of planting in the urban environment. The ultimate goal of the class is to introduce students to the terminology and concepts of technical research, allowing them to follow future advances and incorporate them into their practices.
