The goal of this research effort was to create a human factors design guideline document for future automotive head-up display (HUD) designers. The design guidelines focused specifically on human factors issues related to driver performance, preference, and acceptance. The research effort consisted of seven specific tasks, each represented by a chapter of this document. The first task was a literature review explored HUD issues in the automotive domain, as well as comparable domains (i.e. aircraft, visual performance, etc.). Another element of Task 1 was to identify all information systems that could present items to a driver. This aspect entailed researching both the present systems and proposed Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) information sources.

Task 2 took the information identified in Task 1 and characterized individual information items that could be presented to the driver on a display. The detail of an individual information item was quite specific, e.g., low oil pressure warning distinguished from trend information regarding oil pressure. This process generated over 500 individual information items. As part of Task 2 each item was analyzed via a trade study process to determine appropriateness for presentation on a HUD based on a set of pre-determined criteria. Based on this analysis, 96 information items were deemed appropriate for HUD presentation.

Task 3 used another trade study process to determine the optimal sensory modality and presentation format for the remaining 96 information items. Task 4 developed conceptual designs for each of the remaining information items. A user survey was then created and administered to determine preference and acceptance information as part of Task 5. To asses driver performance while using different conceptual designs, in both a head-up and head-down display, a high fidelity driving simulator experiment was conducted as part of Task 6. With the information collected from Tasks 1 through 6, the design guideline document was created (Task 7).
