Developing programs compatible with the needs and expectations of the participants is the backbone of successful adult education programs. Graduate education, representing a costly, protracted learning experience should be no exception but has been overlooked in adult education research. This study explores the reasons why adults pursue a Masters of Business Administration degree (MBA) at Temple University.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Developing programs compatible with the needs and expectations of the participants is the backbone of successful adult education programs. Graduate education, representing a costly, protracted learning experience should be no exception but has been overlooked in adult education research. This study explores the reasons why adults pursue a Masters of Business Administration degree (MBA) at Temple University.

A 64-item scale to measure motivations was constructed based on in-depth interviews with students in the MBA program. Background and demographic variable information, consistent with similar participation research, was solicited via the survey. Questionnaire data was collected from all MBA students in the 400 and 500 level capstone courses in the fall 1990 and spring 1991 semesters. Of the 380 surveys collected, 346 met the research criteria and were retained. Through factor analysis of the motivation items, six dimensions were identified: (1) Commitment to Learning, (2) Acceptance and Approval, (3) Career Advancement, (4) Convenience, (5) Status of Degree, and (6) Job Expectation. While these motivational orientations were generally consistent with previous findings in participation studies, motivational orientations unique to students enrolled in the MBA program were also described.

The second set of data, the background and demographic data were analyzed in relationship to the six motivational orientations via appropriate statistical analysis. The results led to marketing suggestions for particular segments of the MBA population and cautioned suggestions for recruitment and retention.
