The three essays in this dissertation examine the topics of technology transfer, trade and labor in the context of some contemporary issues in developing countries.

The first essay looks at the economics of child labor. In recent years, as people become more informed about child labor, the natural reaction has been to want to ban it. But if child labor as a mass phenomenon occurs not because of parental selfishness but because of stark poverty and the parents' concern for the household's survival, the popular argument for banning child labor loses much force. However, this assumption about parental decision-making coupled with the assumption of some substitutability in production between children and adults could result in multiple equilibria in the labor market with one equilibrium where children work and another where adult wage is high and children do not work. A diagrammatic technique is developed to illustrate this result and is used to discuss different policy implications.

The second essay discusses the results of the econometric studies on East Asian growth by Kim and Lau (1994) and Young (1994). A multi-sectoral model of technological transfer is constructed which affirms the complementarity thesis of Kim and Lau where knowledge capital and physical capital accumulation (as well as trade) are all necessary for sustained rapid growth. Extending the analysis to a product cycle framework, it is possible to reproduce the persistent technological gap result of Kim and Lau.

The third essay identifies growth in East Asia as an 'emulative process'. Salient facts are extracted from a set of case studies. To capture the essence of the technology transfer taking place, an information-theoretic example is constructed in the form of a multi-stage game where Northern firms possessing information play with the government and workers of the developing country. It is shown that a developing country's government may provide incentives for Northern firms to invest and the presence of these firms allows agents in the developing economy to acquire enough information to launch their own businesses but not enough to out-compete the investors. These findings are related to recent views on East Asian growth.
