Thesis (M.A.)--Queen's University at Kingston (Canada), 2003.
Through an analysis of a selection of contemporary novels by Canadians of Caribbean origin, it becomes clear that the migrant continues to identify with that point of origin while adapting to a new place of arrival in Canada. In fact, it is most often the temporal landmark of the journey itself that holds the greatest influence on the individual's changing sense of self. As migrants within a diaspora, these characters represent the disappointing contrasts between their hopes and the realities of arrival, the resulting sense of displacement and divided loyalties between the home they have left, their future in the new country, and their place in it.

A hybrid model of national identity is then encouraged by reciprocal relationships and a truly multicultural ideology of integration. Definitions of Canadian identity will be narrated not only by naturalized citizens, or by new immigrants, but by the collective experiences of all individuals who share that nation-space, as placed individual relationships between citizens hold the greatest influence on the migrants sense of belonging.
