Beloved is a troubling novel because of the trauma of injustice and oppression contained within it; however, the resilience of the human spirit also occupies the text through Toni Morrison's powerful rendering of characters such as Sethe and Paul D. The love they share allows them to become self-defining and allows their bodies to become agents of resistance rather than bodies that contain the inscriptions of the commodification that is slavery. In addition to an analysis of gender dynamics and resistance, this project also explores the functioning of individualism and community connected to alliance and solidarity. One of the struggles exemplified within the text concerns how characters in Beloved must resist internalizing an agenda that dehumanizes them, and continue to value and affirm their own humanity. Through Beloved's presence, Morrison deploys the image of a ghost as a metaphor representing the haunting and ever-present legacy left by slavery.
