Despite the wealth of data available on adult and infant cercopithcines, relatively little is known about juvenile social behavior. To help fill this gap in our understanding of primate social development, I documented the activity profiles, partner preferences, social strategies, and dominance relationships of juvenile male and female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Over a two-year period, I collected focal samples on 31 rhesus macaques living in a large captive group. Focal subjects were subdivided into two age categories, younger juveniles (1--2 year olds) and older juveniles (2--3 year olds), to capture potential developmental differences within the juvenile period. Few sex differences were apparent in activity profiles. Juvenile males and females generally resembled each other in their maintenance, social, and non-social activities. However, juvenile males and females clearly differed in their partner preferences. Although both males and females preferred their mothers as social partners, they exhibited clear preferences for same-sex peers otherwise. Juvenile males formed particularly strong relationships with their male peers. The preferences juveniles demonstrated for same-sex adults did not appear until they reached the older juvenile stage. Like vervet monkey juveniles (Chlorocebus aethiops), juvenile rhesus macaques appear to choose their partners on the basis of their value as future allies. Juvenile rhesus macaque females and males differed in several aspects of the ontogeny of their dominance relationships, including the rates of agonistic interactions they received from others, the percentage of dominance relationships they formalized, and the influence of maternal rank on the dominance relationships they formed with their peers. Male and female rhesus macaques differed in several aspects of their social behavior that indicate their life histories, especially their social strategies, diverge as early as the juvenile stage.
