This study is devoted to the analysis of standardization of ceramics produced in household production contexts. Standardization has often been used as indirect evidence for specialized ceramic production, with the implication that non-standardized pottery will be produced in small-scale household contexts. It has often been assumed that household potters do not have the requisite skills or knowledge to produce standardized vessels. To test these assumptions, I analyzed four wares from three discrete Late and Terminal Formative occupations at Bezuapan, Veracruz, Mexico. The analysis was conducted to determine the degree of standardization of metric and technological attributes and to determine which attributes were consistently standardized in each vessel class. In addition to an analysis of the physical attributes, I employed x-ray fluorescence and principal components analyses to assess the standardization of paste composition in each occupation.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The results of the analyses indicate that standardization of various attributes is present in ceramics produced in household contexts. Metric attributes as well as paste composition are the attributes that are most often standardized in all wares at Bezuapan. Utilitarian wares in all occupations exhibit the greatest standardization in metric attributes, and paste composition and color.

In order to understand the ramifications of standardization of ceramics in specialized production, standardization in all contexts must be understood. The presence of standardization at Bezuapan suggests that not enough research has been conducted on household production. I argue, based on the evidence from Bezuapan, that household potters were capable of producing, and did produce, vessels with varying degrees of standardization. I further suggest that this standardization was accomplished due to the abilities of household potters; their skill, efficiency, and knowledge, as well as the necessity of producing a functional product.
