This dissertation interrogates sex and gender categories from the middle to the end of the Mesolithic period in southern Scandinavia (Denmark and the province of Scania in Sweden). This interrogation proceeds through examination of mortuary treatments of biologically sexed individuals from Mesolithic graves in the region, in order to determine whether emic sex and/or gender categories were marked in mortuary behaviors or rituals in this remote prehistoric context. To this end, I employ tests of statistical significance of association between biological sex and various mortuary characters. Unlike many previous archaeological interpretations of gender in prehistory, my interpretations of these statistical analyses do not assume, prior to analysis, the ontological status of emic sex/gender categories. Thus, congruent with recent developments in feminist theory and queer theory, I assume neither the number of emic sex/gender categories that "must" have existed in the Scandinavian Mesolithic, nor do I assume the nature of those categories, e.g., whether emic sex/gender categorical identification could vary during the life of an individual.

This dissertation interrogates sex and gender categories from the middle to the end of the Mesolithic period in southern Scandinavia (Denmark and the province of Scania in Sweden). The results of this research strongly suggest that traditionally accepted---but unverified---"universal" associations between biologically determined sex and certain classes of grave goods should be rejected. The statistical analyses of Scandinavian Mesolithic burials demonstrate that associations between biologically determined sex and mortuary treatments must be rigorously established for each archaeological context. I recommend that the methods utilized in this dissertation can, and should, be applied to many other archaeological contexts.

This research suggests further that archaeological interpretations can be enhanced through consideration of ontological variation in sex/gender categories in the past. For the Scandinavian Mesolithic in particular, this expanded conceptual framework permits me to propose various interpretive models to account for the patterns that my analysis identifies. One of these models in particular entails the envisioning of sex/gender systems in the past that would have differed in fundamental ways from any extant sex/gender system. The development of these models about sex and gender suggests that archaeologists may be in a position to contribute to ongoing dialogues in other disciplines.
