Eating disorders are a persistent problem for women on college campuses across the country, and peer education programs are one method that colleges have employed to address these concerns. A previous study found that peer education is actually counterproductive to prevention goals, increasing problematic eating symptomatology directly after an intervention. However, it is hypothesized that the goals of the previous study, and of peer education overall, that short-term, group programs should significantly change a deeply entrenched behavior, might be too extreme.

The current research examined a peer education program using a longitudinal design. Data was collected using the world wide web. As hypothesized, peer education did not significantly change eating disordered cognitions or behaviors, but individuals in the peer education group did use campus services for eating disorders at a higher rate than did the control group. The current investigation also examined the use of the computer to collect data, to determine the effect of the modality of data collection on the information that participants would provide, since previous studies have shown increased disclosure of stigmatized behaviors (but not "normal" behaviors) using a computer to collect data. No differences were found in disclosure rates of non-stigmatized or stigmatized behaviors in the current study based on the modality of data collection employed.

Overall the research suggests that peer education, when viewed as a preliminary change strategy that should be paired with more intensive strategies for those in need, is an effective tool for the prevention of eating disorders or disordered eating.
