Thesis (M.S.)--Eastern Michigan University, 1999.
The Stroop task was used to investigate selective attention of body shape-related words in Caucasian and African American college-aged women. Participants were also assessed on measures of disturbed eating behavior and body-image. The 50 women, all of whom fell below a diagnostic criteria for Bulimia Nervosa, did display selective attention to shape-related words. Measures of disturbed eating behavior and body-image dissatisfaction correlated positively with increased selective attention. Racial differences did not contribute to differences in selective attention or disturbed eating behavior, but were apparent in body-image perception and subsequent issues of body-image dissatisfaction.
