Thesis (D.B.A.)--Nova Southeastern University, 2003.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between burnout and organizational commitment in academic oncologists. The data for this study was provided by oncologists working academic medical centers throughout the United States. The variables used to represent burnout, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment were measured using Maslach and Jackson's (1981, 1986) Maslach Burnout Inventory. Data analyses indicated a statistically significant inverse relationship between personal accomplishment and organizational commitment. The data also indicated significant relationships between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment, and depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Lastly, the results of this study revealed that a significant number of oncologists included in this research are experiencing a high level of depersonalization and diminished sense of personal accomplishment. These findings suggest that if no intervention is undertaken to address these problems, the profession may experience the loss of quality oncologists to other careers.Subjects--Topical Terms:
