This study explored the relationships among sense of humor, spirituality, and psychological well-being in a population of men diagnosed HIV+ and HIV- to determine if the differing health status affected the relationships of these factors. Standard self-report measures were used to assess the factor levels. Correlation matrices and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze the relationships. In 1996, 115 HIV+ and 114 HIV- men in the San Francisco Bay Area participated in a study which measured sense of humor (Multi-Dimensional Sense of Humor Scale [MSHS]), the traits (seriousness [SE], cheerfulness [CH], and bad mood [BM]) that form a temperamental basis for a sense of humor (State-Trait-Cheerfulness-Inventory [STCI<30>]), spirituality (Ego Grasping Orientation Scale [EGO] and the Index of Core Spiritual Experiences [INSPIRIT]) in relation to the absence of psychological well-being (PWB); (Perceived Stress Scale [PSS]) and the presence of PWB (Inventory of Positive Psychological Attitudes [IPPA]).Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a No statistically significant differences were found in the mean scores of all 8 measures between the HIV+ and HIV- group. A noteworthy summary review of the multiple regression analyses and correlational analyses demonstrated a positive relationship of elevated spirituality, sense of humor, and the traits of cheerfulness and non bad mood (traits that form a temperamental basis for sense of humor) and PWB for both groups. A prominent difference between the groups was that CH was a significant predictor of both measures of PWB (p ≤ .01) in the HIV+ and HIV- groups, but not in the HIV- group. Elevated SE was correlated with lowered PSS in the HIV+ group (r = .1839; p ≤ .05) and inversely related (r = -.2141; p ≤ .05) in the HIV- group. Trait seriousness seemed to function differently for those suffering from HIV, which offers an opportunity for future research.
