This study explores the leadership development experience of leaders within a large university health system setting and I defined a leader by his position within the health system, e.g., patient care administrator, general administrator, dean, chief administrative officer, chief executive officer, and chief nursing officer. Leadership is not solely unique to this group. I choose the individuals for this study because of their high visibility and span of authority within the health system.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The central purpose of this research was to determine how the leaders within a large health system setting view experience and formal training with respect to leadership skill development. The central questions were: How did they develop their skills? What was more important, formal training or experience?

Theme one. The initial exposure to leadership development or training varied greatly among the participants. Nevertheless, the process of mentorship was central across the group as all of the participants spoke to the importance of mentorship.

Theme three. Experience is the best teacher. Education and training provide a template for learning. The template once placed over the experiences provides the means of making sense of the experience. Experience without reflection is just time spent. Education provides the skill set to reflect.

Theme four. There is no common style of leadership utilized by the participants in this study. The leaders exhibited several different styles of leadership.
