While the impact of health behavior on self-efficacy is emphasized in the health-related literature, identity is minimally addressed. It is not fully understood how self-efficacy and identity for physical activity are formed and what factors strengthen these constructs.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of category of physical activity in which one engages and length of time of adherence to physical activity with physical activity identity (PAI) and self-efficacy (PASE). To explore these constructs and relationships among them, this study examined individual and shared contributions of two physical activity measures (physical activity category and length of time of adherence to physical activity) to identity and self-efficacy for physical activity.

Employees of a large, Midwestern university (n = 409) were surveyed about their physical activity behaviors, PAI, PASE, and demographic data. ANOVA revealed significant differences in mean scores for PAI and PASE (p < .001) between activity category groups. In both cases, Tukey's post-hoc analysis further revealed differences in mean score were between vigorous and moderate groups and the other less active groups. Vigorous and moderate groups also differed from each other.

Multiple regression indicated linear relationships between activity category and PAI and PASE (r2 = .328 and .310, respectively) (p < .001). Linear relationships were also found between length of time of adherence and PAI and PASE (r2 = .157 and .146, respectively). The unique contributions of activity category and length of time of adherence accounted for most of the variance in PAI (51%). The unique contributions of activity category and length of time of adherence accounted for 48% of the variance in PASE. These results suggest that engaging in vigorous activity strengthens identification with and self-efficacy for physical activity.
