This study examined the predictive capacity of the rehabilitation counselor-client relationship, as measured by the Working Alliance Inventory-Client Form (WAI), for the type of vocational rehabilitation (VR) outcome. The WAI measured the client's perception of the strength of three components of the rehabilitation counselor-client relationship (agreement on the VR goals, agreement on the VR tasks or services, and the personal bond). The scores of the three components were summed to produce a total WAI score that rated the overall relationship with the rehabilitation counselor. The WAI was sent to 943 rehabilitation clients in August 1998 who were either closed successfully or closed unsuccessfully after having written an IWRP or terminated services before an IWRP was developed.

Valid survey responses were received from 255 clients or 27% of the total population. Discriminant analyses were used to determine if there was a combination of subsets of the working alliance that was more predictive of the type of VR outcome than one single overall measure?

Both the combination of WAI subset scores (goal, task, bond, and total) as well as the WAI total score produced statistically significant predictive relationships (alpha = .05). The predictive capacity was especially strong for successful closures, better than chance for early termination closures, and poor for unsuccessful closures.

Vocational rehabilitation program administrators and rehabilitation counselors can use the results of this study to begin identifying ways of improving the rehabilitation counselor-client relationships and increasing the number of successful VR outcomes.
