Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1999.
Self-Determination Theory suggests that behaviors are regulated by innate psychosocial needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The theory also suggests that behavior can be described along a continuum of motivation that includes four levels: (a) intrinsic, (b) self-determined, (c) other-determined, and (d) amotivation. Movement along this continuum is thought to be a natural one as the behavior is internalized. In light of the absence of instruments in the exercise domain that are grounded in psychological theory, the purpose of this dissertation was the development of a valid and reliable measure of motivation in the exercise domain that is grounded in Self-Determination Theory. The sample for the project included two independent samples of volunteer participants drawn from students, faculty, and staff using recreational sports facilities at a large southwestern university. This sample of 731 was chosen because it represents a broad racial mix, and approximates the general population in terms of exercise frequency, modes of exercise, and risk for drop-out. This dissertation included both qualitative and quantitative components of analysis and development carried out in multiple phases. Qualitative components included open-ended questionnaires and feedback provided by independent panels of reviewers and students. Quantitative components included item-to-total correlations and confirmatory factor analyses designed to eliminate poor items. Additionally, correlation and multivariate analysis of variance were used in conjunction with a variety of scales to validate the measure. The final conceptual model included 15 facets that are suggested to relatively exhaust motivations for exercise. These facets are measured by way of 58 corresponding items. Each facet and item was developed within the guidelines of Self-Determination Theory and its underlying continuum of motivation. The final model was tested by way of confirmatory factor analyses and the results suggest that the model and measure adequately fit (CFI = .90; RMSEA = .05; NNFI = .88) Additionally, the measure demonstrated validity through tests of concurrent, discriminant, and construct validity. Although further validation is warranted, this measure has the potential to make a significant contribution in the areas of exercise motivation, adherence, and epidemiology.
