Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2004.
The first part measures the effects of living near a "high quality" college on the college attended. If local colleges provide information about postsecondary education or role models for youth, they may generate "spillover" effects that increase the quality of the college attended, even for individuals who do not attend college locally. Using data from the High School and Beyond Survey, I find that living near a good university significantly increases the quality of the college attended, but only for low-income individuals. This effect persists even when we restrict the sample to non-local college enrollees.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The second part is co-authored with Kelly Bedard. We estimate the impact of moving from a junior high school system, where students say in elementary school longer, to a middle school system on the high school dropout rate. This is a particularly good outcome measure because middle school advocates argued that this new system would be especially helpful for lower achieving students. In contrast to the stated objective, we find that moving to a middle school system increases the high school dropout rate.

The third part estimates the effect of a husband's investments in education during marriage on the subsequent probability of divorce. If the returns to such investments are shared in a marriage (but not after divorce), husband's investments in education should raise the likelihood of divorce under a unilateral divorce regime, but should reduce divorce in a mutual consent regime. Results in the paper suggest that the divorce hazard is higher among investors than among non-investors in unilateral divorce states. However, in mutual consent states, the divorce hazard does not differ significantly between investors and non-investors.
