Success of a student who enrolls in a G.E.D. program depends upon a number of both intrinsic and extrinsic variables. This study examined the effects of the variables skill level, career decision-making, career decision-making self-efficacy, career aspirations, occupational expectations and the congruence of aspirations and occupations on the successful attainment of a G.E.D. for students in a New York City G.E.D preparation program. Students who, for a myriad of reasons, have not succeeded in completing a traditional high school course of study can achieve the G.E.D. equivalency diploma through examination.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The foundation of this study, consists of a group of career-related theoretical perspectives. These include social cognitive theory, career decision-making and social learning theories as they relate to skill level, career decision-making self-efficacy, career aspirations and occupational expectations. The study employed a correlational design and polled 98 students from a New York City G.E.D. program. Findings from this investigation can be used to inform school counselors and counselor educators about the nature of students' skill levels and career-related perceptions and thus, enable counselors to make more effective interventions.

The present study confirmed the hypothesis that students with high reading, comprehension and mathematical skills levels are more likely to obtain higher scores on the G.E.D. predictor test. It was also confirmed that students with a higher degree of career decision-making, as indicated by a lower score in the CDS Indecision scale, are more likely to obtain higher scores on the G.E.D. predictor test. The CDS Indecision subscale was negatively correlated with G.E.D. performance outcome, indicating students who perform better on the G.E.D. exam are less indecisive than students who perform poorly. However, relationships between G.E.D. performance and career decision-making self-efficacy and the congruence variable for career aspiration and occupational expectations, were not found. When combined, only skill level measures and the CDS Indecision scale can moderately predict overall G.E.D. performance. As anticipated, when combined, skill level and career decision-making, career decision-making self-efficacy and the congruence of career aspirations and occupational expectations constructs do contribute to a student's successful completion of the G.E.D. preparation program.
