The primary purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of Body Mass Index levels, nutritional knowledge, selected food habits, influences that affect food choices, and nutrition education among adolescent students enrolled in a high school family and consumer sciences class. The influences of some demographic factors on each of these variables were also investigated. These factors were adolescent's gender, grade level, ethnicity, Body Mass Index, and age.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The sample consisted of 59 male and female adolescents in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades enrolled in a north Florida high school during Spring 2003. Three instruments were used in this study (1) Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes and Behavior questionnaire was used to measure adolescents nutrition knowledge, food habits, factors that influence eating habits, and obtaining adequate meals; (2) Perceived stress scale was used to determine the degree to which life situations are considered stressful; (3) A scale and tape measure were used to determine adolescents Body Mass Index levels.

Bivariate relationships between pairs of variables under study were tested using the Pearson Chi-Square correlation. The major findings that indicated significant differences in variables were related to gender, grade levels, ethnicity, Body Mass Index, nutrition education. Also, adolescent's food behavior was related to their nutrition knowledge and their food habits.
