Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 1995.
This is a heuristic inquiry and theoretical essay on the nature of a person who undertakes the study of massage therapy or who may already be practicing massage therapy. It involves the assessment of the person's motivation for his/her career choice of massage, the experience of teaching massage therapists and therefore an evaluation of the state of training available and perceived needs. The primary strategy is the interview process and the elucidation of personal subjective experience. An overview is constructed that focuses on the psychological and spiritual changes that occur as a result of being trained to do massage, receiving massage as well as practicing it post graduation.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The framework for training and practice issues in massage is multi-disciplinary and drawn from the literature of the history of massage, the relationship of massage to touch and psychotherapy, current research in touch/massage, the history of body centered psychotherapy, the psychological issue of countertransference, the influence of mindfulness meditation on the student, the emerging field of somatics and finally the phenomenology of the body. The work represents an attempt to join complementary disciplines.

Important aspects of this framework include the psychological issue of boundaries, foundation principles in a new somatic psychology and a comparison of the scientific/reductionistic paradigm to the holistic paradigm. Other important aspects of the theoretical framework include a history of the mind/body argument in the West and a relationship with eastern spiritual philosophy.

Several potential directions for development are suggested and explored. They are: (a) body work as a spiritual discipline; (b) cognitive education needed in massage training, and (c) a fully articulated theoretical model of massage education which is currently missing. Implications and recommendations are discussed.
