Thesis (M.A.)--Laurentian University of Sudbury (Canada), 2003.
British and American historians are responsible for many of the studies of the Boy Scout Movement, and its founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. Most often, these works focussed on the formation of the movement, and questioned the actions and motivations of Baden-Powell. Few studies examined the impact of the policies and ideals of the movement at the local level. This thesis explores the origins of Baden-Powell's ideals of nation and Empire, and those of the Canadian Scouting hierarchy. It also demonstrates how ideals of ethnicity, class and gender were used to buttress both the nation and the Empire. Finally, it tests the application of those ideals through examination of Scouting registration records for the Sudbury, Ontario area in the interwar period. Overall, this study emphasises the application of ideals of ethnicity, gender and class, and tests their utility as expressions of nationalism and Imperialism within Scouting.
