Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of South Carolina, 1992.
This is a history of the Boy Scout Movement in America from its beginning in 1910 through 1990. From the time the Boy Scout Movement was brought to America to the present its founders and leaders have considered Scouting an educational as well as a character building program that reaches about one boy out of every four of the Scout-age population. Nevertheless, Scouting has been largely ignored by our schools of higher learning and educational institutions in America. This study focuses on Scouting and tells what it is all about. It is in three parts: Scouting from 1910 to the beginning of World War II, 1942; memoirs of the writer who served as a Boy Scout professional, 1943-1973; Scouting during the tenure of Alden Barber as Chief Scout Executive, 1973, and his successors through December 1990.Subjects--Topical Terms:
