This paper will not discuss the entire Chinese civil war, since not all campaigns during the war were so decisive as to lead to the collapse of the Nationalist regime. The war in Manchuria, for example, was fought on a great scale, but it did not bring down the Nanjing government. However, the Huaihai campaign shattered the foundation of Chiang Kai-shek's dynasty on the Chinese mainland, initiating the collapse of the Nationalist regime.

After the Huaihai campaign, the Nationalist government was divided, but remained to struggle in South China. The situation surrounding the Nationalists continued to be very dangerous, internationally and at home. Chiang's forces were constantly defeated and eventually retreated to Taiwan. Other Nationalist forces, such as the Guangxi troops, were destroyed completely.

Chiang's resettlement on Taiwan was not easy and secure. His troops first defeated the People's Liberation Army in selected battles in Southeast China, and then with great efforts, his government gradually secured firm control over Taiwan. Under U.S. auspices, he not only stabilized the island's politics, but also used the island as his base in order to "recover China."

Why did the Nationalists collapse on the mainland? How could they survive on the island of Taiwan? These issues regarding their retreat, i.e., the fall and rise of the Nationalist regime, are the major concerns in this dissertation.

Basically, this dissertation approaches this subject from a military historical aspect. I will focus on the strategy employed by the two sides, the Nationalists and the Communists, from late 1948 to early 1950. It was a war which combined the Chinese civil war and the Cold War.
