The purpose of this study was to identify the information needs, the sources of information used, and the value of these information sources to informal caregivers of parents and/or grandparents. The effect of how caregiving began, either gradually over time or suddenly due to illness or disability, was analyzed. Analysis was conducted on the effect of age and work on information sources used. Survey data was collected from a convenience sample of 309 caregivers. This study found that caregivers had greater information needs in the performance of instrumental activities of daily living. The most frequently used sources of information were the care recipient's physician and a friend or relative who had been a caregiver. The source of information with both high levels of use and value was a friend or relative. Non-health-related media sources and public and non-profit sources had low rates of utilization. The sudden assumption of caregiving brought the greatest information needs for caregivers who turned to health professionals as well as those who could provide crisis intervention services. When the assumption of caregiving progressed gradually, the caregiver was more likely to use sources that did not require immediate health-related information such as a friend or relative. Those who were employed full-time or part-time had the greatest information needs in the performance of almost all caregiving activities and they were also the greatest users of information sources. Older, working caregivers had the greatest information needs overall. Older caregivers used their own physicians as an information source more frequently than younger caregivers. This study was an effort to better understand the components of the caregiving situation and the information needs of those caring for parents and grandparents.Subjects--Topical Terms:
