The purpose of this study was to document the history of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) from 1965 through 2002, the oldest college student press organization in the United States. Organized in 1909, for the first 60 years of its history, TIPA was under student leadership. In 1969, TIPA's faculty advisers organized as the Texas Intercollegiate Press Advisers Association (TIPAA), and in 1970 the mutually dependant associations opened a central office in 1970. This historical case study examined the reasons that motivated the leadership shift from student delegates to faculty advisers and the issues and obstacles confronting the association during a 32 year period. The study was designed to respond to two basic research questions. The first question was: What motivated the establishment of a TIPA central office in 1970? The question had three parts: (a) What circumstances resulted in a change from a student-led to a faculty adviser-led association? (b) What were the organization's major issues before and since 1970, and (c)  How were these issues resolved? The second research question was: What major events and individuals helped shape TIPA since establishing a central office?Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Chapter 3 of this dissertation is a discussion of the methodology used in collecting, analyzing, and reporting the data. In chapter 4 the data that respond to the first research question are presented by decade using Borland's (1980) five categories of student organizational theory as a framework. For the second research question, data are presented that related to TIPA's leadership and culture, two elements in Schmitz's (1997) student organization model.
