England and Scotland have long relied upon the European Continent to satisfy their thirst for wine. Consequently, their taste for wine was often the result of external political alliances and corresponding internal political and social divisions. This was particularly true in Britain from the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until the Anglo-French Commercial Treaty of 1860. The initial, politically driven change in taste for wine derived from the struggle between England (later all of Britain) and France for economic mastery of Europe and overseas empire. However, a general shift in taste from claret to port that commenced during the late seventeenth century wars with France was further complicated by political and patriotic sentiments, as well as class and gender identities within and between England and Scotland during the Georgian era and beyond. In short, this study argues that the tastes for wine in England and Scotland mirrored the political, social and cultural construction of the British state.Subjects--Topical Terms:
