Methodology. A descriptive approach was used in this study specifically aimed at discovering which factors are most important to effective team building and teamwork in a multiple-staff church. The study then compared the reported results of the three staff positions (senior or executive pastor, other pastors or ministry leaders, and support staff) to determine if any differences in perception exist between the groups with regard to the factors that are important to team building and teamwork.{09}Seven churches participated in this research using availability sampling. Information was gathered during field visits to the churches: eight senior and/or executive pastors, sixty-two other pastors/ministry leaders, and forty-eight support staff participated in the study. Qualitative data was collected through interviews and participant observation. Quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire.

Findings. The participating staff members generally agreed upon such important factors to team building and teamwork as caring relationships among staff, clear mission/vision, clear communications, individual affirmation, a strong leader of integrity who is committed to building a team, shared decision making, corporate sharing and prayer, fun and informal times together, and clear role definitions. Differences were discovered between the staff groups with regard to which factors were most important to team building, the degree to which factors had been implemented on their staff and effectiveness, how well the team was perceived to be operating, and the extent to which members belong to the team.

Of particular interest, the support staffs indicated that they were not part of their staff teams and that this segregation affected the team's performance. In addition, the senior pastors typically had a better perception of staff function and factor implementation then did their staffs. Finally, there appears to be a correlation between how well these important factors have been implemented and how effectively staff members perceive a staff team has been built and is operating.
