Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Memphis, 2001.
This study examined the effect of women's proportional representation in top management teams (TMTs) on communication competence and sexist/nonsexist language. Concomitantly, sex, gender role orientation, and tenure were proposed to influence communication competence and sexist/nonsexist language. Data from self and other perspectives were used in two parallel data sets with a total of 185 respondents participating in the individual data set and 51 in the team data set. Overall, the results do not generally support the arguments presented by this study; however, the results informed understanding of the communicative impact of women in the TMT. The study found more sex similarities than differences and confirmed that gender role orientation is more salient to understanding communication in the TMT than sex alone. Although the women in this study are already at the top, the findings showed evidence of continued consequences from the glass ceiling. While it is clear that merely adding more women to the TMT is not the answer, women do make a communicative difference in the TMT. Women influence the use of nonsexist language by modeling gender-neutral language, becoming members of the in-group, and providing mutual support for other females in the TMT. At the same time, there is evidence that the presence of women in the TMT influences the movement away from a more traditional masculine model of communication towards a more inclusive communication model.
