Despite the proliferation of adolescent pregnancy and parenthood literature, most of the research has focused on teen mothers. However, the information gathered on teen mothers are not necessarily applicable to adolescent fathers in that different factors may influence their parental behavior and experiences. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide insight and understanding of the experiences of African American teen fathers. Because the voices of young African American male parents are not adequately represented in the discourse of social science literature and social policy, this study provides an account of their experiences and examines the social context in which their experiences occur. In-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of 30 unmarried, low-income, non-custodial, urban African American teen fathers, aged 14–19 years old. The Non-numerical Unstructured Data Indexing, Searching and Theorizing (NUDIST) software program was utilized to assist in organizing and analyzing the data. The goal was to understand the lived experiences and meanings of fatherhood through the eyes of African American teens, and the following questions were examined with this goal in mind: How and why did they become fathers? How did they conceptualize and practice fatherhood? What were their relationships with others like? The results of the study were analyzed through the lens of social ecology and gender theory. Findings suggest that while these teen fathers have internalized and accepted the traditional American standard of manhood and fatherhood as provider, there are structural, social and cultural factors that prevent the expression of these behaviors. Youth and immaturity were also factors in the fathers' inability or unwillingness to enact fathering behaviors. As such, African American teen fathers have redefined or modified their standards of masculinity and fatherhood in ways that were consistent with and adaptive to their environments and the worlds around them. This transformation, however, was not met without stress or conflict.
