The general purpose of this research has been to apply cognitive science and artificial intelligence techniques to the problem of developing a cooperative visualization decision aid in the domain of diagnostic radiology. The approach taken to this work has been to examine the relationship between perception of the visual image display and the problem-solving process which utilizes this information in the attempt to produce a diagnostic solution.Subjects--Topical Terms:

To this end, four stages of activity were undertaken. The collection and analysis of experimental data involved the development of a methodology for studying this type of visual reasoning task. The results from this stage led to a number of insights about radiological diagnosis, which, in turn, led to the formulation of a model of the information flow between perception and problem-solving in this type of task. At the heart of the model is the Visual Interaction Process (VIP), a mediating process between perception and problem-solving. The model also includes a number of working memory components which support the function of the VIP. This model is then used as the basis for designing a knowledge-based decision aid, called VIA, (Visual Interaction Assistant). VIA is a blackboard-style system, where the user is also considered to be a knowledge source who posts information to the blackboard, and observes the emerging problem solution there. This system is instantiated for the domain of diagnostic radiology in the form of VIA-RAD, a Visual Interaction Assistant for Radiology. A high level design of VIA-RAD is presented incorporating details of the domain knowledge which emerged from both the initial radiological data and from interaction with medical experts. A small prototype of VIA-RAD was implemented and tested with some radiology subjects, and an evaluation of the results of this stage is also presented.

Contributions of this research are described in the areas of diagnostic radiology, cognitive science, and cognitive engineering, and future research directions include specific extensions to the VIA-RAD system, applications in different domains, and further explorations of the cognitive aspects of visual interaction.
