Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2003.
This study addressed the reasons for the low female pilot participation rate in the corporate aviation sector. The multiple case study methodology was used in an exploratory study designed to identify significant cultural, organizational, social, and economic variables that bear on the issue. The corporate aviation experiences of three female pilots were examined using interviews as the primary research tool. The study concluded the most significant factor affecting their career decisions relative to corporate aviation were their perceptions of flight department leadership. Individual lifestyle requirements, organizational culture, and support mechanisms were also important. All three subjects experienced gender-based sexism of varying levels while employed in corporate aviation. For two of the subjects, alternative career opportunities in the commercial airline sector provided comparatively better work environments. The study provides data relative to the female corporate aviation experience as well as a list of variables for follow-on quantitative survey work in this subject area.Subjects--Topical Terms:
