Thesis (M.S.)--Utah State University, 2003.
As research in coronary artery disease (CAD) grows, authors have discovered that obesity is a prominent risk factor for CAD. Waist circumference was used to determine obesity because of its relationship to abdominal visceral fat. Seventy-five participants with CAD were evaluated at entry and at the end of a fitness program, comparing obese and non-obese participants and their relationship to exercise capacity, diabetes, and depression. Results from this study demonstrated that the obese and non-obese participants were not significantly different for exercise capacity, depression, or diabetes. All of the participants significantly increased in exercise duration and submaximal exercise intensity, decreased in depression and weight, and reduced their waist circumference. Because of the proven benefits of higher levels of exercise capacity, obese as well as non-obese individuals with CAD should be encouraged to reach as high of level of physical capacity as they safely are capable of attaining.Subjects--Topical Terms:
