The purposes of this study were to determine the effect of a consistent and regular sightreading regimen and to determine the effect of Educational Kinesiology upon the music sightreading skills of high school instrumental music students. Two advanced band classes were chosen to participate in the study. Following a pretest to assess each student's sightreading ability, the control group (N = 26) sightread predetermined selections of music each class period over a 6-week (13 class sessions) treatment period. In addition to the same sightreading regimen, the experimental group ( N = 25) participated in 6 Educational Kinesiology activities prior to engaging in the reading experience. Following the treatment period, the subjects were again assessed to evaluate improvement in sightreading skills.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The data revealed that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest mean scores for combined groups, that is, both groups combined, improved in sightreading ability. Analysis of the data revealed that, even though the experimental group improved 23.42% more than the control group, the difference in percentage improvement was not statistically significant. Further analysis revealed that private lessons and experience accounted for improved test scores. The mean score of the experimental group with low years of experience improved significantly (p < .003) more than the control group.

The implications of this study are: (1) a consistent sightreading regimen improves sightreading ability, (2) Educational Kinesiology activities may facilitate the development of sightreading skills, especially in students with fewer years of experience, (3) private lessons account for improved sightreading scores, and (4) years of experience also account for improved sightreading test scores.
