Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Houston, 2003.
Technology integration into all subject areas of the public educational system is required by state and national governments (Office of Technology Assessment, 1994; The Texas Education Agency [TEA], 1998; US Department of Education, 2001). Access to computers and the internet is increasing in public schools (Cattagni and Farris, 2001), however, learning to integrate new technology into the curriculum is problematic for teachers, administrators, and policy makers. Several studies have investigated technology integration in elementary and secondary classrooms (e.g. Atkins & Vasu, 2000; Chen, 1999; Gershner & Snider 2001; Mills, 1999; Rogers, 1999; Sandholtz, Ringstaff, & Dwyer, 1997; Wells, 2000), but few have examined electronic media usage in art education. The present study uses a modified version of the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ) developed by Hall, George, and Rutherford (1979) to determine art teachers' concerns and students' level of use of electronic media in Texas visual arts classrooms. Data were collected at the Texas Art Educator Association (TAEA) convention in November 2001. One hundred and fifty art teachers from elementary, middle school, and high school levels completed the questionnaire. Results show that use of the internet to research art and artists is the form of electronic media used most often in surveyed classrooms. Video and animation were used least. Teachers' concerns were highest in the information and collaboration stages. Based on the findings, a staff development plan to help art teachers integrate electronic media into the curriculum is discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
