As humans are living longer, the need for health care is increasing. Optimizing health care involves creating a system that provides individualized therapy that maximizes the outcome of care. To that end, this study suggests an organizational health model that provides patients with the ability to select a medical provider system that fits their needs and addresses their medical concerns. This model will provide the patients with access to traditional medical care as well as alternative or complementary health care.Subjects--Topical Terms:

From an organizational theory perspective, the innovative creation of an integrative health system will enable the system to have more diverse knowledge, resources and better outcomes. Knowledge work involves the creation of new understandings of nature, organizations or markets and their application by a firm in valued technologies, products or processes (Boland & Tenkasi, 1995).

Drawing from that theory, three knowledge systems were compared: Eastern Medicine, also known as Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM); Western Medicine, also known as Traditional Medicine; and Integrative Medicine. The knowledge in the latter medical system differs from the other two organizations by having more diversity and complexity.

The primary focus of this research is to study patient satisfaction and personal perception of health as outcomes and dependent variables resulting from three different therapeutic interventional systems described above. Knowledge for an effective action requires a fusion of knowledge of CAM and traditional medicine, because mere contextual reconfiguration of additional knowledge may not be enough.

The study also looked at the interaction between organizational readiness or implementation of integrative medicine and its effect on patient satisfaction and health perception outcome.

Three hundred consecutive patients who presented with pain due to musculoskeletal etiology were targeted from each center. The Instrument of Satisfaction Scale and the Patient Perception Survey (SF-36) were conducted by asking these patients to respond to the questions in the survey/instrument. Patients responded to the scale after they volunteered to participate in the study. To avoid heterogeneity of the population in the study and to have a well-matched population in the three medical systems, demographic data, number of visits, number of comorbid illnesses, income, and insurance availability were collected from all patients. The latter was collected as additional information along with the other surveys.

To evaluate for interaction between organizational readiness and implementation of integrative medicine and patient satisfaction, 30 of the top 3-teir administrative staff were interviewed from the three medical systems using the Readiness Survey and the Implementation Scale.
