Autism is a life-long developmental disability that impacts an individual's communication and social skills. Furthermore, individuals with autism exhibit repetitive motor movements and odd rituals such as repetitive hand flapping, or insisting that the physical aspects of a room remain in precise order. In addition to these core symptoms, many individuals with autism exhibit severe self-injurious, aggressive, or non-compliant behavior. The severity of the challenging behavior can lead to serious injury to self and others and, at times, requires hospitalization or long-term residential care. Currently, scientists know little about the pathophysiology that results in the presentation of autism.Subjects--Topical Terms:

While medical science has not identified any medications that address the core symptoms of autism, many families seek the help of physicians to address the most challenging aspects of the disorder. Families, support providers, and physicians attempt to address behavioral concerns with psychotropic medications one symptom at a time. Most physicians commonly use antipsychotic medication with moderate success. However, this is at high risk of side effects.

A correlation was performed between multiple independent variables and the dependent variables, taking medication, and class of medication taken, using discriminant function analysis. The dependent variable, number of medication taken, was correlated with individual and family independent variables through multiple regression analysis.

In short, monitoring practices do not meet the expert consensus practice guidelines and are, at best, poor in this community-based sample.

The results of this investigation provide important information for parents and primary caretakers, physicians, school and service personnel, and other professionals who support individuals with ASD. Recommendations include the development and implementation of interventions to decrease the prevalence of psychotropic medication use in this population, and directions for future research.
