Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, 1987.
The purpose of the study was to determine relationships of selected entrance characteristics (pre-admission variables) to cumulative grade point average (GPA), graduation/non-graduation status, and national board scores of graduates from three allied health programs. Other purposes of the study were to produce formulas for use by allied health educators in student selection and advisement.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Students enrolled in the associate degree dental hygiene, radiologic technology and respiratory therapy programs at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale during the years of 1981 to 1985 comprised the population. The study involved five graduating classes of students (n = 324).

Stepwise multiple regression, Pearson correlation analyses and point biserial correlations were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program.

Natural science ACT scores were included in the greatest number of regression formulas (5). High school GPA was the next (4) and high school class rank, age, and composite ACT scores were included three (3) times.

Dental hygiene students had the best high school records and the highest ACT scores. Respiratory therapy students had the lowest high school performance but the second graduated percentage (85%) to dental hygiene's 93 percent.

Natural science ACT scores were consistently associated with the highest Pearson correlations. High school class rank, high school GPA and composite ACT scores were associated with the next best Pearson correlations. These were followed by English ACT scores and mathematics ACT scores respectively. Age, prior college experience, and gender were, contrary to prior research, not as indicative of success.

Formulas for predicting final college grade point average generally had the highest significance levels. Board scores were next, followed by graduation status, as a distant third. Formulas for respiratory therapy graduation/non-graduation status or national board examination scores were not significant.
