Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Iliff School of Theology and University of Denver, 2003.
This dissertation is a study of the legal metaphors in the book of Job. The thesis is that comparative study of the book against approximately 250 Neo-Babylonian litigation records reveals a wealth of information about the trial between God and Job. Most importantly, the research discloses that the Satan brings a substantive legal charge against Job for having the guilty mind of a blasphemer and that Job is prepared to counterclaim against God on a charge of abuse of authority. The parties enter extensive settlement negotiations, during which all the trial's potential witnesses speak. The study reveals that, during the Neo-Babylonian period, convictions typically required a second accusation against the defendant in order to obtain a conviction. Elihu provides that critical second accusation against Job on the blasphemy charge, something that Job cannot muster for his counter-claim. This results in Job's concession of the dispute. In spite of the concession, God offers a settlement of the claims in favor of Job because he knows that Job is, indeed, a blameless and upright man.Subjects--Topical Terms:
