The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a 1-hour pet-facilitated occupational therapy group on the levels of depression, anxiety, and pain self-reported by inpatients on a psychiatric unit. Visual analog scales (VAS) were used to collect self-reported levels of the above variables from patients in the study group and a control group. VAS were effective instruments for collecting multiple self-reports from patients, except for patients with vision deficits or confusion.

Results included a statistically significant decrease in the study group's self-reported level of anxiety, and statistically significant decreases in self-reported levels of depression and anxiety for study group patients with mood disorders. These findings support the effectiveness of using pets as therapeutic adjuncts to occupational therapy, and contribute to the existing literature on the effectiveness of pet-facilitated therapy in a psychiatric setting.
