This dissertation advances the general discussion of the relevance of historical inquiry for the Christian faith by examining the works of J. P. Meier and N. T. Wright on the historical Jesus. The first part of the dissertation explicates Meier's account of the historian's task and how it relates to theology as well as Meier's methodological proposal for conducting historical Jesus research. The dissertation then proceeds to examine his performance of historical Jesus research in light of his account of the historian's task, its relationship to theology, and his methodological proposal for historical Jesus research. The first part of the dissertation concludes that Meier's performance of historical Jesus research goes beyond the narrow methodology he articulates, and calls into question his account of the relationship between critical history and Christian faith. The second part of the dissertation investigates Wright's account of cognitional theory (critical realism), his methodological approach to the historical Jesus, and his understanding of its relationship to theology. Examples of Wright's performance are enlisted to examine this understanding. The second part of the dissertation concludes that Wright's performance falters as it fails to account for the development of the biblical material, and fails to assess the historicity of particular biblical passages. The final section of the dissertation lays out how and why Meier and Wright differ in their respective understandings of historical inquiry, their methodologies for and performance of historical Jesus research, and their explicit positions on the significance of historical inquiry for Christian faith. By focusing on two major figures in historical Jesus research and by clarifying their differences, this investigation helps define the issues at stake in the ongoing discussion of “the historical Jesus” and “the Christ of faith.”Subjects--Topical Terms:
