Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Southern California, 2001.
The research presented and discussed in the thesis concerns organic light-emitting diodes comprised of small organic molecules and metal complexes. The goal of the thesis work is to understand factors that determine the efficiency of dye-doped OLEDs and electroluminescence color tuning based on the dye-doping technique.

Novel aluminum complexes bearing a triarylamine derivatized phenoxide moieties and their performance in OLEDs in terms of hole and electron transporting properties are considered. The main factors that govern the quantum efficiency of dye doped OLEDs such as optimal dye doping concentration, Förster band Dexter energy transfer mechanisms and fluorescent verses phosphorescent dyes in terms of achieving the maximum OLED efficiency are evaluated using the specific examples. The major methods of electroluminescence (EL) color tuning in OLEDs are described, and the new way of EL color tuning based on the adjustment of the strength of intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction in the solid matrix of OLED is proposed.
