The purpose of the present study was to broaden and refine our understanding of the role of Attributional Style, Hopefulness, Coping, Psychological Well-Being and Physical Health in the context of a life crisis, the transition to college. Towards this end, the roles of Attributional Style, Hopefulness and Coping in predicting Psychological Well-Being and Physical Health were examined through multiple regression analyses, using longitudinal and prospective methodologies.

Findings of the present study revealed that longitudinally, Time I Attributional Style predicted subsequent Time 2 and Time 3 Psychological Well-Being both directly and indirectly through the mediation of Time 2 Hopefulness. In addition, Time 2 Hopefulness was shown to relate to Time 2 Psychological Well-Being both directly and indirectly through the mediation of Time 2 Approach Coping. At Time 3, the mediation component of Approach Coping dropped out.

Contrary to expectation, the findings of the present study longitudinally predicted poorer Physical Health. However, the structural framework was as predicted at Time 2. At Time 3, no proposed study variables were predictive of Physical Health.

Contrary to prediction, Time I Attributional Style did not prospectively predict an increase in Psychological Well-Being between Times I and 2. However, Time 2 Hopefulness did prospectively predict an increase in Psychological Well-Being. This relationship was partially mediated by Time 2 Approach Coping. For increase in Psychological Well-Being between Times I and 3, the results were similar, though the mediation component of Approach Coping dropped out.

The findings of the present study, contrary to expectation, prospectively predicted a decrease in Physical Health between Times I and 2. However, the structural framework was as predicted. For change between Time I and Time 3, only Hopefulness was Predictive of Physical Health and, again, this relationship was inverse to that hypothesized.
