This study proposes a model of trust-building in elementary schools that is based on the literature of trust in organizations and effective school research. Working from the Bryk and Schneider theory of trust in schools, I put forth a set of mechanisms that school leadership can use to set the stage for building trust, to engage people in simple social interactions and to promote more complex interactions. This study includes three case studies of elementary schools that experienced a growth in trust in the years after new leadership was put in place to serve as examples of the model's mechanisms in action. While all three principals in the case study schools began his or her tenure at the same time, they each inherited a different set of trust relationships. The first school enjoyed high trust among the adults in school at the beginning of the case study period. The second school suffered from a lack of trust upon the principal's arrival, and the third school had some problem areas but scored fairly well on measures of trust. In addition to bringing life to the trust-building model, the cases suggest interesting insights as to how the model might operate in different contexts. I explore these contextual differences in trust-building using Hierarchical Multivariate Linear Modeling and survey data from the Chicago public school system.Subjects--Topical Terms:
