Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 2001.
This study is a description of life in a first-grade classroom in a public school. Using naturalist and ethnographic methods, an examination of the classroom, instructional practices, and the underlying tenets were described. Focus centered on the spontaneous topics initiated by children during their school day. Analysis of these utterances revealed various “non-school” topics. These themes included clothes, drugs, violence as well as some personal ones. These interests and concerns frequently distracted some children from classroom work. It would behoove educators to be aware of the possibility of “distracting preoccupations” in the children in their classrooms. This is especially important when considering children in the earlier grades and those struggling with academic issues.
