Thesis (Ph.D.)--Emory University, 1999.
This dissertation attempts to carve new directions for religious thinking and being through religious aesthetics. The dissertation considers ways of thinking and sensing religiously that do not rely on traditional models of transcendence and representation usually attached to a study of aesthetics. The key concerns have to do with the way the human body perceives the words and images of the world, and the way these bodily perceptions interact with other human bodies.

The dissertation falls into two main parts. Chapters 1 and 2 examine the writing of Walter Benjamin to find a religious aesthetic through his notions of allegory and the mechanically reproduced work of art. Benjamin shifts the aesthetic focus away from the disembodied consciousness of a single individual as he calls for the “disseminating spectatorship” of a “mass movement.” His aesthetics are materialist, and they remind the reader of the etymological, corporeal roots of aesthetics: that which “pertains to sense perception.” Once in the realm of the corporeal, the emphasis on the aesthetics of the single individual is shifted outward to the aesthetic interaction in and between others. Among these “other” interactions are the interactions between words and images, between bodies and technology, between words and technology, or between others.

In part two these religious aesthetics are continued through an analysis of contemporary video-installation artist Gary Hill. In four chapters, several of Hill's art works are analyzed as they further demonstrate the interactions of words, images, bodies, and others, as initially laid out in Benjamin's work. Continental philosophers/writers such as Martin Heidegger, Julia Kristeva, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Maurice Blanchot help to “bridge” the space and time between Benjamin and Hill, while also expanding the necessary ingredients of a contemporary religious aesthetics.
