Upon close exegetical inspection of two Hebrew roots for dance used in the Old Testament (<italic>h&dotbelow;ûl</italic> and <italic>p&amacr;sah&dotbelow; </italic>), the theological relationship of the Israelites to their God YHWH comes into greater clarity. The religion of the Israelites consumed every aspect of their culture. Their dances, whether celebratory or worship-centered, revealed their relationship with YHWH. Idolatrous feasting, dancing, and worship clearly displayed the people's separation from a monotheistic lifestyle. Through the evident role of dance in Israelite celebration and worship, God's jealous nature called for sacred dance to establish “no other gods before Me” (Exo. 20:3). God coveted the dance, including the dances of celebration and victory, as sacred worship unto Himself alone. Indeed, the Old Testament passages containing <italic>h&dotbelow;ûl</italic> and <italic>p&amacr;sah&dotbelow; </italic> reveal the heart of the people toward their God as well as the covetous nature of God toward sacred worship and dance.
