Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 1999.
The standard interpretation and an alternative ontological interpretation of quantum theory exemplify the philosophical debate between realists and anti-realists. But the choice of interpretations is difficult; as interpretations they are underdetermined with respect to one another, since they produce identical experimental results. An evaluation of the two interpretations reveals that their differences reduce to dissimilarities of emphasis, which results in a blurring of the line between realism and anti-realism. Thus the realist/anti-realist distinction is seen not as a true dichotomy, but a continuum relating to the objectives and emphasis of science.

Imre Lakatos's concept of research programmes is suggested as a model for creating an inclusive scheme for quantum mechanics that will hold the formalism of the theory at its core and incorporate the more speculative, interpretive elements as a positive heuristic that will function as a regulative principle for future development of the theory.
