None of this music has been dealt with extensively before. The works by Lovanio and Natalis are the only known works attributed to these composers in the MS sources. Detailed analyses of the Mass music of each composer are presented in Chapters Three, Four and Five. The analyses reveal refined and often complex compositional techniques of melodic, rhythmic and contrapuntal or harmonic unification, melodic transformation, use of pre-existing melodies, variation techniques, and in Hugo de Lantins' music, extensive use of imitation, especially at the fifth. His imitative techniques include through-imitation and both strict and free canonic imitation. The latter may involve changes of interval, augmentation, diminution, interpolation and omission of notes. Lovanio's music is retrospective and shows the influence of earlier French Mass music, including Machaut's Mass. His echo writing is reminiscent of Ciconia's. French influence is likewise present in Natalis' Gloria with its sections in syllabic discant style, but it too shows the influence of Ciconia in its monophonic setting of the words Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis . Both the Lovanio and Natalis pieces have unus-chorus alternation and mensural changes. The analyses have provided some evidence to confirm the likely places of origin of Lovanio (Leuven) and Natalis (who was very probably the Maitre de Chant of the Cathedral of Liege in 1421--22).

This study also offers an introductory chapter on the ecclesiastical, political, and musical history of the Diocese and Principality of Liege up to the middle of the fifteenth century, and an inventory of sources, compositions, and modern editions of music by a number of other Liege composers. Chapter Six presents an extensive survey of imitation in works by Ciconia and other predecessors and contemporaries of Hugo de Lantins in an effort to discover those who may have influenced him. Hugo's imitative techniques may in turn have influenced Dufay, many of whose early works are also surveyed.
